Mars is the fourth planet from the sun. It has a thin atmosphere that makes ascending easier and landing more difficult. It has two natural satellites, Phobos and Deimos.
Mars has a tenuous atmosphere, which can slow down a spaceship enough to survive, but not quite enough to prevent damage. When sending a ship to Mars, it is good to first enter Martian orbit or at least aerobrake to slow down. Also, a retrograde burn is recommended before touchdown. Due to its weaker gravity, powerful engines are not required to leave Mars' atmosphere.
Since the 1.4 update, a large mountain stands up some 10% through Mars' atmosphere. This seems to be a representation of Olympus Mons.
